Kamaru Usman has unquestionably already made MMA history. The Nigerian nightmare has been destroying one opponent after another in the welterweight division and still remains undefeated in the UFC despite being in the organization since 2015.
The Nigerian phantom even looks so fearless that he reigns supreme in the pound-for-pound rankings across all weight classes. But even that’s certainly not enough for him. He wants to become a legend and the absolute king of the sport.
Usman is grinding his teeth for the welterweight title. Now, the reigning champion is none other than the Moravian samurai Jirka Procházka. Moreover, the welterweight division is definitely one of the most crowded divisions in the world’s top league.
“I don’t need to put on weight, people don’t understand my death grip,” he bragged to MMA Fighting. So the Nigerian certainly doesn’t mind moving up two weight classes. He’s confident despite the obvious weight disadvantage.
But UFC owner Dana White is certainly not a fan of such a move. “I think it’s absolute insanity,” White made clear during the MMA Underground podcast. “I wouldn’t talk about it at all yet,” he said.
“Just look at the animals in that weight class,” he explained his stance on the matter. “There’s Jiri Prochazka, Jan Blachowicz, Glover Teixeira, Magomed Ankalaev, ” he said.
“They are all great and terrifying fighters, ” he said of the packed division. “If I have to give my opinion, this is a very bad idea, ” he added firmly.
The attitude of the charismatic promoter will not please the Nigerian fighter. But he should instead focus on this weekend’s UFC 278 event, where he faces Leon Edwards, who is riding a nine-fight win streak in the UFC, in the night’s main event.
