Jiri Prochazka is injured and will not fight at UFC 282. This information has been circulating not only on the Czech internet tonight, but now more information is gradually coming out. One of them is from UFC president Dana White himself.
For all combat sports fans who were not on the internet on Wednesday night, this is a huge shock. Jiri Prochazka is injured and will not be defending his championship belt in December.
Worse, however, is that the injury is serious and although he himself believes he will return after six months, some predictions say he will wait even a full year.
Out of respect for the other fighters, he has relinquished the title, and so he will fight for the interim title in the UFC in the future, the winner of which will then fight Prochazka immediately upon his return.
Back to the injury, though. It’s his shoulder, which popped out while he was training in Las Vegas, where the tournament will be held. The Blachowicz – Ankalaev pairing will now take care of his highlight.
The Czech champion’s injury was commented on by the president himself, Dana White, who no doubt liked him and the news of the injury didn’t do him much good.
“This is the worst shoulder injury that doctors have ever recorded in the history of the UFC,” he told Yahoo Sports . He’s going to have major surgery that will require extensive rehab.
We met with Jiri last night and listen, the guy just has a level of class that you rarely see. He’s literally a warrior, but of course he was overwhelmed by it all. But he’s the one who started talking about giving up the title.
He’s going to be out of the game for a long time, so it was probably going to come down to that eventually anyway, but before we could even suggest it, George made the decision. He brought it to us and said he didn’t want to hold up the division out of respect for the other fighters. I’ll tell you, the kid’s a dude for reacting like that,” White said.
