When talking about the greatest fighters in UFC history, the debate tends to be long and controversial. However, UFC President Dana White is clear on this. His choices include names that changed MMA forever.
- Jon Jones – the best pound-for-pound fighter and the king of title fights
- Ronda Rousey – the pioneer of women’s MMA, without whom women wouldn’t fight in the UFC
- Conor McGregor – the man who took the popularity of MMA to a global level
Dana White is quite clear on who are some of MMA’s greatest legends. These four names, according to him, are among the absolute top of the mixed martial arts world:
“You have to start with Jon Jones,” White said in an interview with ESPN. “And then there has to be Ronda Rousey. Without her, women would never fight in the UFC. Georges St-Pierre is next, and of course Conor McGregor. He has elevated and changed MMA on a global level.”
Jon Jones was the first name White mentioned. It’s no surprise, as White has long referred to Jones as the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA history. With 16 title fights, the most in UFC history, Jones’ place at the imaginary top is unshakable.
His dominance and fighting skills make him not only the champion of his weight class, but a fighter who is hard to compare to anyone else.
The female symbol of the UFC
The second spot on White’s list goes to Ronda Rousey, a former bantamweight champion and member of the UFC Hall of Fame. Rousey not only dominated her weight class, but she was a key figure in making White change his original opinion that women should never fight in the UFC. Rousey became a symbol of women’s MMA and her influence is still evident today.
St-Pierre, another name on White’s list, is one of the most dominant champions in two weight classes. With nine successful title defenses at Welterweight, she ranks second in UFC history in terms of wins in title fights, just behind Jones.
His career has been full of records and incredible feats that have made him one of the most recognized figures in all of MMA.
And finally, Conor McGregor. His place on the list is completely deserved, not only because of his achievements in the cage, but more importantly because of how he has turned the UFC into a global phenomenon. McGregor became the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously.
His stellar rise and charismatic personality have drawn enormous attention to the UFC. Although his results in recent fights have not been ideal, his impact on the popularity and growth of MMA is undeniable.
Each of these names undoubtedly deserves a spot on White’s list. While the debates about the greatest fighters of all time will likely continue, Jon Jones, Ronda Rousey, Georges St-Pierre and Conor McGregor have left an indelible mark on MMA and will forever be a part of mixed martial arts history.
