Jiří Procházka has had surgery and will be out for several months. Many say his injury was one of the worst they have ever seen. But how did it happen? That’s now explained by Dana White.

There probably isn’t a combat sports fan who doesn’t know about Jiri Prochazka’s injury. Shortly before his title defense, he hurt his shoulder badly and all hope was lost.

The Czech fighter eventually had to head to surgery, which went well, and it looks like he could fight for the championship belt again next fall.

But how did his injury happen? According to previous statements we know that it was during sparring, but now Dana White has outlined that there was a really big mistake and everything could have turned out much better.

The night it happened, we sent a doctor to Jiri and he literally said that in all the years he’s been in the UFC, this is the worst shoulder injury he’s ever seen.

It was really bad. But Jiri is an incredible fighter, so he still wanted to fight, which of course we couldn’t let him do. The thing was, he threw his shoulder out and then as they were throwing it back in the gym, they tore it all up and destroyed it.

That’s why I tell everybody that if something like that happens, they should jump in the car and go to the hospital right away. We’ll cover it for them. It’s not worth the risk of dealing with it at the gym. It’s crazy,” White said in an interview with Paddy Pimblett, who will be headlining the UFC 282 event.

When will we see his return?

So the question then became how long before he’ll be back. Predictions have been as high as 8-12 months, with Prochazka himself talking about five.

“Of course we discussed what will happen next. Jiri talked about thinking he would be back in five months, but the doctors were on our side, so we tried to explain to him that we had to be realistic.

I told him that I just didn’t want to put him under pressure, that he would feel he had to defend his title and he would damage his shoulder unnecessarily again. Instead, he can take it one step at a time, so in the end he decided to vacate the title. He’s the man.

So we have a new title fight, but it’s important to say that we’ll still look at Jiri as the champion because he didn’t lose the title, he vacated it so that others could fight for it. It’s possible that he’ll get two title fights in before he comes back from surgery, but we’ll see,” White added.

Instead of Prochazka, Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev will fight for the title. The winner should defend with Glover Teixeira and then the Czech Samurai should be back on the scene.
