In recent years, men’s tennis in the Czech Republic has been on the decline. Currently we have only one representative in the elite 100, Jiří Veselý. Only he is guaranteed to participate in the main Grand Slam tournaments.
In the men’s part of the Wimbledon qualification, Lukáš Rosol, Zdeněk Kolář and Tomáš Macháč are among the Czech players. Only Jiří Veselý, who is 71st on the ATP ranking, is guaranteed to participate in the main part of the tournament.
So how did the tennis players who had to overcome the qualification obstacles fare? The worst result was recorded by thirty-five-year-old Lukáš Rosol, who finished in the first round on Kacper Zuk’s racket.
Unfortunately, Zdeněk Kolář will not be present at the top of the grass season. Although he defeated Slovak Martin Klizan in the federal derby, he subsequently fell short to Serbian Nikola Milivojevic.
The best chances were, however, given to Tomas Machac. The 20-year-old tennis player made his Grand Slam debut in January, where he lost to Italian Berretti in the second round.
The confidant of coach Daniel Vacko overcame the first two qualifying pitfalls, sending home both Tommy Robredo and Brayden Schnur. However, he did not build on his previous performances in the last round, where the tournament is played in three sets, and Christopher O’Connell earned his ticket to the main part of the tournament.
However, if some tennis players withdraw from Wimbledon in the coming days, Machac could take his place as the lucky loser, thus complementing Jiri Vesely.
