Seven years. Exactly until 2028, the matches of our national football team will be broadcast by Czech Television.
Today, on 8 October, CT announced this on its website, where we can also find the statement of the Director General, Petr Dvořák. “Sports rights have been a problem for all public broadcasters for the last few years.
The enormous viewer interest opens up significant opportunities for presentations by advertising and sponsorship partners, which makes sports rights a valuable commercial commodity that in recent years has been increasingly acquired by large multinational companies, not public service broadcasters, thanks to their financial capabilities.
Nevertheless, Czech Television is working hard to ensure that viewers do not miss out on the free-to-air broadcasts of major sporting events.”
Viewers can thus look forward to the next three cycles of the UEFA Nations League and the qualification battles for the World Cup or the European Championship. Above all, as you can see in the post above, CT has acquired the rights to the two biggest European championships.
So at least the national team matches will remain on CT and we don’t have to look hard for other streaming platforms.
However, the same cannot be said for our club scene, as all the broadcasting rights for Fortuna League matches are owned by O2, and this is how it should remain. CT, as we all know now, does not broadcast any Champions League matches either.
As far as Europa League and Conference League matches are concerned, Czech Television has the rights to these competitions until 2024. However, it is hard to say whether the same will be true in the future.
