When a fan looks at the current state of Czech women’s tennis, his heart must sink. Two players in the top 5, six tennis players in the top 50. And there’s another huge jewel on the rise, Brenda Fruhvirtova, who is just turning 14.

Fruhvirt is currently ranked 1079, but if she keeps this up, she’s going to rise very quickly. In Argentina, she was competing in only her third international adult tournament and was undefeated.

In the ITF tournament in Tucumán, she beat Brazil’s Carolina Meligeni Alves, who is ranked 240th in the world, in the final. And all this at only 14 years old, she will be able to get her ID in two months.

Brenda first knocked out Miriana Tona 6: 2, 7: 5, then easily sent home Lucia Peyrer 6: 1, 6: 3. In the quarter-finals she faced 186th ranked WTA player Elina Avanesian, she turned the match around with the Russian and won 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 2.

In the semifinals, she faced the top-ranked player, the local Paula Ormaechea (176th), but she also managed to win 6:1, 4:6, 6:4.

In the final, she overcame the aforementioned Alves 6: 3, 6: 3. Ironically, the match lasted the shortest time, the Czech wonder managed to win in 75 minutes.

Thanks to her victory in Argentina, Fruhvirtová moves to the top 700 of the WTA rankings.
