After the four tennis players and the absence of Jiri Vesely at the Olympic tournament were confirmed, great news came to the Czech Republic. The men’s tournament will finally feature 20-year-old talent Tomas Machac, opening up the possibility for the Czech Republic to play mixed doubles.
But first, let’s take a closer look at the man who became the 117th representative of the Czech Republic at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Tomas Machac is currently ranked 144th in the world rankings and is the Czech number two behind Jiri Vesely and ahead of Lukas Rosol.
He currently has 6 titles from lower category tournaments, a total match record of 117 wins and 59 losses and a positive record in the last 4 years. Machac is currently playing a clay court challenger in Braunschweig, Germany, where he has passed the first round so far. His coach is Daniel Vacek.
And now let’s go to how the 20-year-old tennis player actually got to the Olympics. The reason is the redistribution of the vacant spots left by the withdrawn players, thanks to which Machac just got in.
“Based on my negotiations with the ITF, we were offered this opportunity,” said Ivo Kaderka, the head of the Czech Tennis Federation, reacting to the young Czech’s start. “We welcomed his start and together with the Olympic Committee we organised his participation at the last minute,” Kaderka added.
Tomáš Macháč’s chances in the singles are likely to be very slim, but there is a chance that he could play in the mix alongside his girlfriend Katerina Siniakova. The tennis tournament will be played in Tokyo from 24 to 30 July 2021.
