Czech Republic holds the longest home unbeaten streak since the beginning of the century, if not for the coronavirus it could have been even longer
The Czech national team drew with Spain 2:2 on Sunday and is in second place in its group in the Nations League. It was the eleventh home game in a row in which they did not lose. That’s the longest streak since 2020.
The Czech national team drew with Spain 2-2 on Sunday and is in second place in its group in the Nations League. It was the eleventh home game in a row in which they did not lose. That’s the longest streak since 2020.
The start of the unbeaten streak dates back to 15 November 2020. The Czech Republic defeated Israel 1-0 in the fifth round of the Nations League to stay in contention for first place. In the end, they actually dominated the group, thanks to another home win, this time over Slovakia 2: 0.
Good results in the World Cup qualifiers followed, with a draw against Belgium, a win against Belarus, a draw against Wales and another win against Estonia, interspersed with wins in friendlies against Albania and Kuwait and a draw against Ukraine.
The successful home streak will not end in June this year either, as Jaroslav Šilhavy’s charges first beat the Swiss 2-1, then played an even game with the Spaniards, leading twice and finally drawing 2-2.
How big an achievement is eleven undefeated matches? Really big! The last time our national team kept a similar streak was between 1997 and 2000, when they did not know the bitterness of losing even twelve games in a row and they even won all of them.
The streak could have been even five games longer if not for the unlucky defeat in the Nations League to the Scots. The Czech Republic was playing with the B-team, as the original team was not allowed to take the field due to positive tests for coronavirus, yet they outplayed the Ostrovans, but fell 1: 2.
