Inter Milan are struggling in the Champions League, but Milan Škriniar is not affected. The Slovakian international stopper was named man of the match in Tuesday’s match against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Inter failed to make the start of the new Champions League season. It looked for a long time like a goalless draw with Real Madrid at home, but Rodrygo’s goal late in the game robbed Inzaghi’s charges of all points.

The winner of the last edition of Serie A went to Ukraine with a clear goal, to beat Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian vice-champion also had a lot to make up for, losing at the opening group stage to Sherif Tiraspol.

Although Inter fielded the strongest possible line-up, the home side were clearly more active. They kept the ball in 66 percent of the game time, recorded twice as many passes as Inter, but only failed to score (only two shots on target).

Milan’s midfield was particularly dysfunctional, Matías Vecino completely disappeared in the second half, and the spearhead strikers were unable to hold the ball up properly.

Inter were saved from conceding by a well-functioning defence. Especially Milan Škriniar, who blocked shots on goal in both halves, or in the second half it was a centre directed at a free player in front of an empty net.

The Slovakian international won the award for the best player of the match for his excellent performance.

However, he cannot be too pleased, as his team has only one point after two rounds of the group stage. In the next two games against Sheriff, they need to get six points if they want to think about advancing to the knockout phase.
