For the second Grand Slam tournament in a row, Czech tennis was represented in the women’s singles final. After Karolina Muchova at the French Open, Markéta Vondroušová played for the trophy at Wimbledon. And unlike her compatriot, she succeeded. She became the champion after winning twice 6:4 against Uns Dzhabir.

Vondroušová, as the 42nd tennis player in the world before the peak of the grass part of the season, was not one of the favourites, also because in the past she was not very successful on this surface. Last year, she did not play for a long time because she was recovering from a wrist injury.

However, she proved to be in very good form on her way to the 2023 Wimbledon final. On the courts of the All England Club she successively defeated Peyton Stearns, Veronika Kudermetova, Donna Vekic, Maria Bouzkova, Jessica Pegula and Elina Svitolina.

Almost five years older, the Tunisian rival of the twenty-four-year-old native of Sokolov had already played for the valuable title a year ago. Then, in the final match of the most famous tournament in the world, she failed to beat Jelena Rybakina.

This time she defeated the Kazakh in the quarterfinals. Before that, she knocked out Magdalena Fręchová, Pai Zhuosuan, Bianca Andreescu and Petra Kvitová. In the semifinals, Dzhabirova turned around the unfavourable outcome of the clash with Aryna Sabalenka.

The two finalists had already faced each other twice earlier this season. Vondrousova, who won both the Australian Open and Indian Wells, was more successful each time.

The world number six entered the duel on the London Centre Court better, taking the Czech’s first serve. But Vondrousova managed to get a break in the next one. At 2:3 from the Czech point of view, Djabirova used another break point, but her opponent again found a quick answer.

The key moment finally came in the ninth game, when the player whom the domestic tennis fans wanted to win took the lead for the first time. She then calmly completed the set to win 6:4 and came closer to winning the dream trophy.

In the second set, both tennis players had problems with holding their own serve, so first each of them managed to convert two break points. As in the previous case, the decisive role was played in the ninth game.

Vondroušová again took away the serve of the Tunisian, who was also suffering from a higher number of unforced errors. After taking the second match point in the following game, the defeated French Open 2019 finalist and silver medallist from last year’s Olympics could start to rejoice in her first victory in a grand final.

Markéta Vondroušová thus became the third Czech to dominate the women’s singles at Wimbledon. Uns Dzhabir, on the other hand, did not become the first African and Arab tennis player to triumph among the women’s singles players at a grass-court grand slam even at the second attempt.
