Once again after two years, the Czech Republic had a representative in the final of the French Open. After 2019, when Markéta Vondroušová left with a beating, Barbora Krejčíková was also in the fight for the title. She challenged Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Unfortunately, Barbora lost her serve in the opening game and gave it to her opponent with two double faults. Fortunately, the Czech tennis player was able to cope and won Pavlyuchenkova’s serve to level the match at 1:1. And the Czech player went into a slump.

In a few minutes she was up 4: 1 and the nervousness from the beginning was gone. Moreover, the Russian bought one error after another and offered Krejcikova the opportunity to serve for the first set win after 27 minutes. And when the pre-tournament world No. 33 managed to turn the game around from 0::30 with four straight points, she celebrated a very quick opening set win.

Pavlyuchenkova entered the second set a completely different Pavlyuchenkova than she did at the start. She immediately won Krejcikova’s serve and led 3: 0 in 12 minutes. The native of Samara also benefited from Krejcikova’s errors, which were piling up to the annoyance of the Czech fans.

After the Czech managed to escape from a set point at 1::5 and reduced the score, her opponent called for a physiotherapist and it ended with a medical timeout.

After the Russian’s left leg was treated, both tennis players returned to the court and went on to finish the second set. And unfortunately, it didn’t last long. Pavlyuchenkova managed to hit the Czech with hard shots and finally won the second set 6: 2.

The third set, in which everything was on the line, started better for the Russian. Krejcikova turned it around to 2: 1, but then another break came and at 2: 2 it was de facto from the beginning. The nervousness was skyrocketing.

Krejcikova was able to go on a tear at 4::3, when she had a break and a chance to bounce the Russian to a two-game difference. And she finally did. On the rally, the Czech hit two great smashes and was one game away from winning the biggest trophy of her career.

First game, a beautiful short game by Krejcikova, 15: 0. After a tie-break from the Russian, another fancy finish from Barbora and the win was two balls away. Then a backhand line shot and the Czech had 2 match points! She missed the first one thanks to a good serve from Pavlyuchenkova. In the second one, the Czech lost her own chance with an error. The Russian finally reduced it to 4:5 with a series of 4 points in a row.
