Czech tennis saw a change in the national number one last week, when Jiri Vesely was replaced by Tomas Machac. But a few days later, Jiri is the best Czech again.
But this time it’s not Vesely, but 20-year-old Jiri Lehecka. After his wins over Shapovalov and Van De Zandschlup in Rotterdam, he appears as the Czech number one in the live ranking.
Lehečka has been going through the tournament in the Netherlands since qualifying. He currently has five wins in a row.
The 20-year-old will move up to 112th place, at least temporarily, overtaking Machac, who is a year older.
Moreover, in the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam tournament he will face Lorenzo Musetti, the weakest opponent the Czech has met in the main event.
It is also very likely that Lehečka will remain number one in the new ranking released on Monday.
Only his namesake Vesely can spoil his joy, but he would have to reach at least the final in Bengaluru. Lehecka can confirm his role as the best Czech by winning against Italian Musetti.
