The Czech national football team took an important step towards advancing from Group A to the play-offs at the international tournament in Baku. In their third match they beat Georgia 6:3 and scored full points for the first time after two draws.

After only eight minutes, the Czech team took a three-goal lead. “We mainly caught the start, we scored quick goals at the beginning, which calmed us down and we could play on the ball.

You could see a bit more calmness in us when we were leading after that. It was good except for a hesitation towards the end when we stopped playing for three minutes and got three unnecessary goals,” said Czech player Daniel Kasal.

He scored twice. “The goals came almost from signals, rehearsed things. One from the game, I had it well prepared,” Kasal said.

In the eighth minute, Jiri Sodoma increased the lead with the third Czech goal. “There was a ball up, I think Moučis (Ondřej Moučka – ed.) was finishing, he hit a defender and I thought the ball might bounce after the shot, so I was finishing.

It bounced into the scrum, I tried to shoot from one, the goalkeeper just knocked the shot away, then I was on my own and cleared it into the empty net,” Sodoma described.

“We finally got a good start in the game, as we scored three quick goals, we dominated the game,” he added.

After Denis Lanka’s second goal in the 45th minute, the Czech side increased the lead to 5:0, which Georgia then reduced with three shots.

“We were in full control of the match almost the whole game. Unfortunately, at the end we wanted to attack a bit recklessly and there was a lapse when the Georgians scored a goal. Suddenly they were everywhere, they gave us a second and a third, but there was no time and we took care of it. We had a lot of other chances, if we had converted them, the score difference could have been much higher,” said Czech national player Jiri Sodoma.

On Thursday, the Czech team will play Italy in the last match of the regular Group A at 3:30 pm. It is second in the table two points behind Serbia. The winners of the group will advance directly to the semi-finals, while the second and third-placed teams will face each other in the knockout round.
