The Davis Cup team advances to the final tournament. Last week was again successful for Czech tennis fans. Another improvement in the ranking maximum was recorded by Jiri Lehecka and Linda Noskova. However, the most significant improvement was recorded by Zdeněk Kolář.

This year has started well for domestic tennis fans. Jiří Lehečka made a surprising quarter-final at the first Grand Slam of the season, while Linda Nosková reached her first final at the age of eighteen.

It is the young talents who should experience a move to the absolute top of the world this year, at least everything points to that so far.

Minimal changes in the female tennis players – Noskova in the top 50

In a week when two tournaments of the lowest category were played on the WTA women’s circuit, only three Czech players joined the game. The most inexperienced of them, Tereza Martincova (88th) unfortunately fell to the racket of later finalist Caroline Garcia in Lyon and dropped one place.

At the same event, Noskova (50th) had to go through qualification first. She managed to do it without any problems and in the end the native of Vsetín made it to the top eight. This achievement marks the debut of the 18-year-old tennis player among the elite fifty.

Another young hope Linda Fruhvirt (52nd) attempted a similar feat in Hua Hin, Thailand. The older of the promising sisters, despite being seeded eight, dropped out in the second round and fell one place. However, she is only two points behind her compatriot Noskova.

The other elite Czechs rested and did not see any changes in their rankings. This week, however, we can look forward to Karolína Plíšková or Barbora Krejčíková. The tournaments in Abu Dhabi and Linz are on the agenda.

Lehecek’s best and Kolar’s jumper of the week

In a week when the ATP circuit had a “pause”, a couple of Czech tennis players managed to jump up the rankings. Lehečka (37th), together with Tomas Machac (117th), helped the Czech Davis Cup team to advance to the final tournament, but that is not the only reason to be happy.

Despite the zero points, the Mladá Boleslav native moved up two spots thanks to the deductions of other players. He continues to improve his personal best.

It took twenty-six-year-old Zdeněk Kolář (214th) ten months to reach the semi-finals again. The tennis player, whose highest ATP ranking is 111th, has recently struggled with a significant decline in form.

However, he started this year with a very surprising promotion to the top four at the German event in Koblenz.

As an unseeded player, he ultimately fell short of the gates of the final of this challenger to Canadian Vasek Pospisil (100th), but the jump of forty places is undoubtedly an encouragement for the rest of the season.
