It’s about to break out. We’re just hours away from the start of the US Open. Players from all over the world will compete for the final Grand Slam trophy of the season. The Czechs will have big ambitions. And they have every reason to be. Karolína Muchová reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, Barbora Krejčíková became the champion of Rolland Garros, Karolina Pliskova played the final of Wimbledon. The Czech tennis players have been on a roll at the Grand Slams this year, will they do well in New York?

Barbora Krejcikova

The biggest Czech hope. She’s having the season of her life. Strasbourg title, Rolland Garros champion, Olympic women’s doubles winner. 25 wins since May, only tasted the bitterness of defeat three times. Thanks to this great form, she has climbed into the top 10 to 8th place. She’s even second in the seasonal rankings.

She will have big goals at the US Open. The hard court suits her. She’s in the perfect frame of mind, she’s confident. She’s absolutely fulfilled for this season, she won’t be under so much pressure at Flushing Meadows. A relatively playable draw may also help her to a big run at the US Open. The Rolland Garros champion is definitely one of the wider favourites.

Karolina Pliskova

The native of Louny is the highest seeded Czech. She is currently ranked 4th. This is mainly thanks to the great form she has shown in recent months. In the first half of the season she struggled a lot, dropping out in the first rounds of tournaments, losing to almost anyone.

The turning point came at Wimbledon. At the All England Club, Pliskova was in great form. She had a sensational run and reached the final. She didn’t finish the tournament of her life with a Grand Slam trophy, but she still achieved one of the greatest successes of her career.

She confirmed her great performance in the following tournaments. The North American tour was very successful for her. In Montreal she reached the final, in Cincinnati her journey stopped in the semi-finals. Moreover, the US Open is her favourite tournament, the local surface is the most ideal for her. Pliskova’s in form, she’s putting in very good performances. There’s no reason why she can’t build on that in New York.

Petra Kvitova

The winner of 2 Grand Slams is not coming to New York with exaggerated ambitions. This season she has not been doing well at all. Her only success is the title from Doha, otherwise no glory. She had to withdraw from the last tournament in Cincinnati because of health problems. The US Open is also not one of her favourite tournaments, the furthest she has reached is the quarterfinals. If she advances to the second week, she can consider this year’s US Open a success.

Markéta Vondroušová

The Czech tennis player made a splash by winning a silver medal at the Olympics. After months of playing misery, she has finally achieved a great success. Then she played in the American tournaments, where she again dropped out quite early. So her performance is pretty erratic. The question is how successful she’ll be at the US Open. She has a pretty tough draw, let’s not expect any miracles.

Karolina Muchova

The Czech player had a great start to the current season. She reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, it was the tournament of her life. It was supposed to be a breakthrough year for her, when she would attack the top 10. However, a nasty injury dashed those expectations.

Muchova has been dealing with an abdominal muscle injury practically all year. The Czech managed to play only 8 tournaments. Although she was not in ideal shape, she reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. However, at the last tournament in Cincinnati she had to withdraw again due to injury. So it is not certain whether she will be 100% ready. In addition, she will face a tough opponent in the first round. Advancing to the second week would be a miracle.

Siniakova, Martincova, Bouzkova and Kristyna Pliskova will still play in the main draw. In their case, any more success at the US Open would be a huge surprise.

Czech women’s tennis is enjoying a successful era. Great results at the last 3 Grand Slams are a clear proof of that. Will the Czechs confirm this at the US Open?
