Czech golf at the Olympics: Lieser and Spilkova will fight for a miracle in Tokyo
Czech golf is still catching up with the world level in vain. When it comes to the most prestigious tournaments on the planet, we look for the Czech flag in vain. We can be all the more happy that the Czech Republic has two representatives at the Tokyo Olympics.
Czech golf is still catching up with the world level in vain. When it comes to the most prestigious tournaments on the planet, we look for the Czech flag in vain. We can be all the more happy that the Czech Republic has two representatives at the Tokyo Olympics. Among the women, Klára Spilková, and among the men, Ondřej Lieser will be chasing the fairways.
Golf does not have a great history at the Olympic Games. It was part of the sporting event under five rings only in 1900 and 1904. It didn’t make a full return to the Olympics until 2016. Even then, the Czech team had one representative.
KLÁRA SPILKOVÁ
The Czech golf beauty has made it to the Olympic Games for the second time in a row. The 26-year-old golfer finished 48th at the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
“I definitely had bigger ambitions, so I’m not completely satisfied, but I’m still trying to take it positively,” the twenty-one-year-old Spilková told Czech Television five years ago.
This year she is older and definitely more experienced. In 2019, she even made her way onto the Ladies PGA Tour, the highest possible category in the world. Against other players and toys, she is literally the only Czech drop in the ocean who can compete with the best.
“I am very happy that I will be able to represent and be part of the Czech team again as I did five years ago in Brazil.I can’t wait for the beginning of August when the Olympic tournament starts,” said Spilkova, who is currently ranked 130th in the world rankings, after her successful qualification.
ONDŘEJ LIESER
While Klara Spilkova has been among the world’s best for some time now, Ondrej Lieser is still conquering the golf sky. Last year he literally took off like a rocket. Not only was he the first Czech to win a Challenge Tour tournament, but also the entire prestigious series.
He managed to fight his way into the European Tour and also into the top 60. At the Tokyo tournament he will play for the first time in his life against the biggest stars of world golf.
When Lieser said a few years ago that he wanted to make it to the Tokyo Olympics, he didn’t have much of a chance. But then a fantastic end to the season took him to a whole new dimension. Since then, the 29-year-old has shown that he can play alongside the best.
Both Spilkova and Lieser will definitely enjoy the tournament in Tokyo. Any medal ambitions seem very exaggerated at first glance, but golf is indeed an unpredictable sport. You never know which player from the lower tiers will have the week of his life ahead of him. Moreover, only 60 golfers start in each category under the Olympic rings.
