The Czech U21 football team managed to turn the game around in their first barrage match in Iceland and took home a 2-1 win. They entered the return match in a comfortable situation and as a favourite.
The Czech U21 national football team managed to turn the game around in their first barrage match in Iceland and took home a 2-1 win. They entered the return match in a comfortable situation and as a favourite.
Compared to the first match, coach Suchopárek made two changes. Kryštof Daněk and Daniel Fila dropped out of the starting eleven, while Matyáš Kozák and Michal Ševčík, who missed the first match for health reasons, started the match.
Nothing happened in the first half hour of the match, neither team could create an interesting position. The only thing that disturbed the spectators was when Matyáš Kozák slipped behind the sideline and caught up with the opposing team and received a yellow card.
The whole first half was played at a similar pace. Mostly played in the middle of the pitch, the teams practically did not reach the opponent’s sixteen. The 0:0 result, which ended the first half, played more into the hands of the Czech lionesses.
At the beginning of the second half, Iceland got to play a corner kick, after which the ball ended up in the upper net. Iceland knew they had to score. In the 57th minute, Dórhalsson shot from outside the box and just missed the crossbar.
However, the Czech team also threatened. After a bouncing shot by Cervo, which the goalkeeper was lucky to knock away, our players won a corner. Iceland often made forward forays, but did not get any big chances. In the 83rd minute, Worm shot again, aiming for the crossbar, but the goalkeeper made a fantastic save to keep the ball out.
The Czechs kept the scoreless result to get closer to progression, so towards the end of the match coach Suchopárek started to make substitutions. In the 91st minute, Friðriksson sent a cannon shot on goal, but Matěj Kovář held the Czechs. Iceland’s goalkeeper also ran for a corner kick, but our players turned it away.
The Czechs kept the result by stalling. Soucek got a yellow card for moving the ball during a direct kick and Žambůrek got a card for continuing the action even though the whistle was blown. In the 94th minute there was a big scuffle between the players, with Hranac earning a yellow card. Iceland’s Friðriksson even received a red card when he failed to contain his emotions and elbowed a player.
This altercation ended an otherwise very uninteresting match. The Czechs, after a 2:1 result in Iceland and a 0:0 result at home, qualify for next year’s EURO.
