Cup champion Schranz: He has saved Slavia’s promotion several times, yet he is still underestimated
It looked like a penalty, then Ivan Schranz jumped on Peter Olayinka’s centre and decided Slavia’s promotion to the Conference League group. It wasn’t the first time he saved the Red and Whites from relegation in Europe. Let’s recall his big moments.
It looked like a penalty, then Ivan Schranz jumped on Peter Olayinka’s centre and decided Slavia’s promotion to the Conference League group. It wasn’t the first time he saved the Red and Whites from relegation in Europe. Let’s recall his big moments.
Schranz scored his first major cup goal in the opening round of last year’s Conference Europa League group stage. Against Union Berlin, a second-half volley sealed a 3-1 win and a good start to the new competition.
The Slovakian striker clearly suited the Union and scored again in the Berlin rematch and in the direct battle for promotion.
He opened the scoring with a successful shot under the crossbar, the home side only managed to equalise, but it was not enough to advance.
After the winter break, Schranz was also successful in the knockout stage of the Conference League. He scored against Fenerbahce Istanbul at home and assisted in the opening quarter-final against Feyenoord to help them to a 3-3 draw in Rotterdam.
In the third round of the new Conference League against Panathinaikos, he surprisingly did not even get nominated, but in the end the coach put him straight into the starting line-up and he scored the decisive goal.
And he didn’t come out dry in the next round either. In the rematch with Raków, he came on during the second half, assisted the opening goal and in the 120th minute, with an accurate header, he pulled the match away from Slavia. Thanks to him, it did not go to a penalty shootout.
So not only does Schranz always run countless kilometres in Europe, he also has a flair for goals and the ability to take responsibility when needed. And such a footballer will be very useful to Slavia, especially in the group stage.
