Crystal Palace have finally found a replacement for coach Roy Hodgson, who left the team at the end of last season by mutual consent. This is former legendary defensive midfielder Patrick Vieira.
Patrick Vieira spent his best playing years as captain of Arsenal, with whom he won three league titles and three English Super Cups. Alongside that, he managed to win the World Cup with France.
Vieira has only worked as a head coach at OCG Nice and New York City so far, so the Crystal Palace job will be his most significant coaching challenge yet. And not just because of the environment.
At the end of last season, a total of 11 players were out of contract and became free agents. The French coach with Senegalese roots has yet to assemble a new team this summer.
With it, he should then stay in the top English football league and ideally take it one step further, i.e. to a higher position than the 14th place where Hodgson left it.
“I am really excited to return to the Premier League and manage this great football club to start a new chapter together,” Vieira was quoted as saying on the Crystal Palace website.
“This is a project that is really appealing. I have spoken a lot with the chairman and the sporting director about the ambitions and plans for the whole club, including the academy. The club has great foundations after many years in the Premier League and I hope we can improve it.”
