Cristiano Ronaldo’s son, who currently plays in Manchester United’s academy, has reportedly begged his father not to retire. The reason will surprise many.
Cristiano Jr. follows in his famous father’s footsteps
Cristiano Ronaldo, despite keeping himself in excellent physical shape thanks mainly to a healthy lifestyle, turned 37 last month. But people in the football world are already suggesting that his advanced age is starting to show on the pitch.
The star himself, of course, does not acknowledge his age and has more than once proclaimed his desire to continue his passion after 40. If he keeps his word, he could make his eldest son’s dream come true.
Cristiano Jr. will celebrate his twelfth birthday in June, and in his career he has shown much of the footballing skill he inherited from his father. After all, at his young age he has already shone in the academies of Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United.
Cristiano would love to play alongside his father
Moreover, he is honing his skills under one of the best footballers of all time. His star father, according to The Sun, said his son is asking him for an interesting request. “Dad, hang on a few more years, I want to play with you,” the son of the United star asks his father.
Considering that Ronaldo senior played his debut for Manchester United at the age of nineteen (note: Messi played for Barcelona at sixteen), with his son doing the same, the star Portuguese would have to last at least seven to eight more years. While nothing is impossible in the context of the Portuguese canon, it is not very likely that their steps would meet on the pitch in a competitive match.
The Portuguese superstar posted a photo on his Instagram showing father and son training together. “Present and future,” he wrote to the post.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner predicts his eldest child could achieve great things in football. But he continues to give him the choice of choosing his future profession. “Time will tell, I will never push him,” he said of his son’s future.
Examples of fathers and sons as teammates in football history
The father and son combination on the football field is certainly an unusual situation to say the least, but we have seen some examples of this in the past.
At the age of 17, former Chelsea and Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen replaced his father Arnor in an international match for Iceland. However, they did not play together on the pitch at the same time.
There are a few instances in football history where father and son were teammates. Henrik and Jordan Larsson had the opportunity to play together for Hogaborg in Sweden. Just like Brazilian World Cup winner Rivaldo was a teammate of his son Rivaldinho in the Brazilian team Mogi Mirim.
Let’s hope that even if the collaboration on the football turf between the Portuguese cannonballer and his son doesn’t work out, young Cristiano Jr. will go down in similarly bold letters in the history of world football.
