Chaos broke out in the Europa League match between Malmö of Sweden and Union Berlin of Germany when fans started throwing flares on the pitch between the players. The match had to be suspended for 20 minutes. What are the penalties for both teams?

The Europa League Group D match between home side Malmö and visiting Union Berlin offered a truly extraordinary spectacle. This was especially the case on the part of the fans, who caused a twenty-minute interruption of the match with their disturbances.

It all started at the beginning of the second half, when suddenly during the game a flare appeared on the pitch. Very soon the match was interrupted and fans from the opposite side of the stadium started throwing more pyrotechnics on the pitch.

Not only the players themselves were in danger, but also the security staff. One of the firecracker explosions was heard in close proximity to them.

After a 20-minute interruption of the match, firefighters and other workers managed to calm the situation. The match was able to finish. In the end, it was better for the visiting Union, who won narrowly 1: 0.

What were the official statements of both teams?

Representatives of both teams commented on the incident on their Twitter profiles. “Suddenly it was chaos, it’s not clear what happened. Probably flares flew from both Union and Malmö. However, question marks are over everything, we will wait for more information, ” said the Union Berlin twitter profile.

Malmö deeply regrets the situation caused by the pyrotechnics. Today’s situation is something that has never happened in our stadium and does not belong in any stadium in the world. Our team disavows any illegal actions by individual fans.”

“It must be safe to go to football, Eleda Stadium must be a safe place to visit. We will work hard to ensure that this is the case,” Malmö representatives added.

Of course, both teams face significant financial penalties. The whole incident is expected to be dealt with by UEFA, which has already had to deal with similar cases.

For example, Marseille played the Champions League match completely without fans because of previous disturbances. And a similar scenario could be repeated in this case.
