Controversial statement from the Ferrari boss: I don’t see why we can’t win 10 races now! What did he say about the Hungarian GP?

Formula 1 has already taken twelve Grands Prix this year and despite the start of the season, Red Bull now seem to have both championships in their hands. Furthermore, Charles Leclerc made a fatal driving error in France that apparently cost him the win. But Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto has come out and said he sees no reason why Ferrari should not now win the remaining 10 races.

The Italian team currently finds itself in a difficult situation. Although Ferrari have built a very fast and workable car, they have been plagued since the start of the season by reliability, very poor team decisions and last but not least driver mistakes.

We don’t have to go far for an example, when on Sunday the Monegasque Leclerc crashed from first place, depriving not only himself but the whole team of very valuable points.

Earlier in the season, specifically in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and in Australia, Carlos Sainz failed to finish these races, even though Daniel Ricciardo was heavily involved in one of the accidents.

Leclerc’s mistake in France, however, has had fatal consequences so far. Max Verstappen drove to victory at Paul Ricciardo’s circuit and has now leapfrogged Leclerc in the drivers’ championship by a margin of 63 points. Red Bull, on the other hand, has an 82-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Cup.

However, there is still a large chunk of races (10) to go before the end of the 2022 season, with Formula 1 now just past the halfway point. Thus, even this lead is not insurmountable yet, as Binotto himself stated.

In an interview with Motorsport, the Ferrari boss reflected on whether the Italian team’s hopes of winning the title currently depend on Red Bull making mistakes in the upcoming races.

Binotto’s statement

“I don’t know because I don’t count points. If you had asked me before this race what the difference was between Max and Red Bull, I couldn’t have answered that because I don’t know, I’m not looking,” Binotto said in an interview.

“We focus on each race individually and our goal is always to score as many points as possible, to get the maximum in the results. But that didn’t happen here at the Paul Ricard circuit. Now we are focusing on Hungary and going for the double,” he adds.

“I think every single race counts like all the others and only at the end we will add it up and see. We need to stay focused, looking back at the last races, we always had a lot of potential. It didn’t turn into the best results, but at the moment there is no reason why it can’t happen in the next ten races,” he concluded.
