Real Madrid made it through to the opening eight of the Champions League, winning 1-0 at Leipzig. The match was marred by a controversial disallowed goal by Benjamin Šešek, as well as missed chances. Brahim Diaz was the referee.
Leipzig started very actively, in the second minute Benjamin Šeško got the ball into the net, but from an offside position. A minute later the Slovenian striker had another chance, but missed the ball from a volley and Andriy Lunin intervened.
On the other side, Real threatened twice after a corner kick, the first time a home defender hit his head, the finish was covered by the goalkeeper. Shesko continued to be active for Leipzig, but he only let Lunin develop a false chance.
After an intense opening quarter of an hour, the pace calmed down a lot, Real started to control the ball as expected. It didn’t lead to danger though, with the absence of striker and also Jude Bellingham missing a shot, Leipzig defended well.
Braim secures the win for Real with beautiful action
The first half thus ended goalless, with Leipzig the more dangerous home side. After the change of sides, Real went into the lead out of nowhere, Brahim Diaz’s shot from just outside the area hitting the left post. The Spanish international opened the scoring.
On the other side, Dani Olmo could have equalised, but Lunin saved it, as well as a shot by striker Šešek. In the 61st minute, Shesko ran at the goalkeeper again, but the Ukrainian international ran out in time and deflected the pass behind the defence.
On the other side, Rodrygo had an insurance on his foot, but he missed the ideal moment to finish and shot over. And in the 70th minute, his compatriot Vinícius also failed, but he finished a nice individual action only into the right bar.
In the 82nd minute, the home side wasted two more chances, with Lunin keeping out both Xavi Simons and Šešek. Real finished the game with experience, Leipzig did not let anything happen and will go into the home return leg with a one goal lead.
