Conor McGregor in action again. On Saturday night, he appeared at London’s O2 Arena for a boxing gala, where Anthony Joshua knocked out Robert Helenius in the night’s main event. The Irishman stole the media’s attention for himself and said a lot.
The Irish star was due to return to the cage at the end of the year for the first time since the summer of 2021, only he didn’t manage to enrol in the USADA anti-doping program in time and that means a big complication. However, UFC boss Dana White still insisted that the chance was there.
Furthermore, Conor McGregor was originally supposed to fight Michael Chandler, but subsequently said he wanted to fight someone else. During Saturday, however, he said that Chandler would be his next opponent. When? December.
Even Chandler has already agreed to the date on social media, but what about USADA? A fighter has to be in a testing program for six months before a fight to be eligible. The most that’s in play is an exemption, which has only happened once in history.
The year was 2016 when former UFC champion Brock Lesnar got that exemption. He won his fight, but tested positive afterwards, so he lost his win and also faced a one-year suspension.
However, if McGregor gets a similar exemption, it will be a very controversial move. Already, many fighters complain about the Irishman being treated very special.
So the question is how this will all play out. Either way, the McGregor vs. Chandler duel is definitely attractive and interesting for fans.
McGregor has also outlined other plans
Whether the fight happens this year or another time, Conor McGregor is quite clear about his plans. First he wants to face Chandler, then he wants to challenge Justin Gaethje for the BMF title, and then he would like to conclude the trilogy with Nate Diaz.
All of the duels would definitely break viewership records. The Diaz trilogy in particular would be extremely watchable, however Nate is no longer under contract in the UFC and it’s questionable how realistic that scenario is.
To make matters worse, the Irish superstar has asked for a boxing match without gloves. The influencer known as KSI, who is a big star in the UK, has been eyed as an opponent.
