The lightweight division is ruled by Islam Makhachev, we can also find stars like Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier or Justin Gaethje, yet a completely different name is the one that appears most in the media. Conor McGregor.
Since the summer of 2021, when he last fought, he has been awaiting his return. There is constant speculation as to when it will happen. The terms or his opponent have also been discussed. First it was supposed to be Michael Chandler, then it wasn’t, now it is again.
Moreover, McGregor is always harping on someone, always saying what he wants, what his plans are, how he would fight with whom, but these are just words for now. Some people are running out of patience. Gaethje, who wants to send him into retirement, has had his say.
Of course, it’s worth mentioning that a fight with McGregor is a lucrative affair. It’s a “money fight” for everyone. Plus, it means visibility, a lot of media attention. What’s Gaethje’s motivation, that’s the question.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t dream of ending his career and making sure he could never come back. Chandler will be the second fighter I’ve beaten that he’ll fight. That speaks for itself. Hewon’t be in the cage against me,” MMA Junkie quotes him as saying.
Gaethje defeated Poirier in July and, in addition to wanting to send McGregor into retirement, would like to fight for the title again. Champion Makhachev has a rematch with Oliveira ahead of him, with Alexander Volkanovski also in line.
“Volkanovski had his chance. If I hadn’t finished Poirier the way I did, he probably would have had a better chance, he fought Islam well, but knocking out a world number two, winning the BMF title? There can be no doubt that I’m next,” the American added.
