Early on June 30th, the UFC was about to make a big comeback. Conor McGregor was set to step back into the cage after three long years. Only that’s not going to happen. Instead, Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka will provide the main event. Now the star Irishman has broken his silence.
Probably the most expensive tournament in the history of the UFC, the ticket prices were really overpriced. This was supposed to be UFC 303. The reason for all this was the return of an Irish star. After three years, Conor McGregor was due to go into action and he was going to fight Michael Chandler.
But the fight wasn’t going to happen. At least not at the aforementioned gala, which will take place on the night of June 29-30. The organization believed that only the return of the former two-time champion could lure people in such a way that there would be no need to build a star-studded card.
But there have been several changes. First of all, Khalil Rountree, who was supposed to face Jamahal Hill, dropped out of the tournament. He was replaced by Carlos Ulberg, only to have Hill drop out due to injury. Ulberg will then take on Anthony Smith.
The closer the tournament got, the more it became clear that Conor McGregor was not going to be there. It all started with a hastily cancelled press conference earlier this month. A long silence followed. Even the journalists had no idea what was going on. The famous Ariel Helwani tried his best. But even he didn’t have completely accurate information.
But early Friday morning, everything was announced. The McGregor vs. Chandler fight at UFC 303 will not happen. Instead, Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka took the fight on short notice. Other than that, a duel between Brian Ortega and Diego Lopez has been added.
Conor McGregor broke the silence
All we know is that Conor McGregor is injured. No one has provided any further information. However, during Saturday, the Irish star briefly commented on the whole situation on social media.
“Very annoying to have to cancel my comeback. I wasinjured before the press conference and the treatment required more time than I had available,” the legendary fighter let slip.
“The decision to postpone the fight was not easy at all. But after consulting with my doctors, the UFC and my team, we came to the conclusion that there was no other way. The fans and my opponent deserve my return, and they will see it. Thank you all for your support. I’m optimistic, I believe I’ll be back,” McGregor concluded his message.
