Conference finals in Prague? Soon to be a reality. Prague city councillors have agreed to a request from the Football Association of the Czech Republic (FAČR) to bid for the final of Europe’s third competition in 2023.
For the Czech Republic, such an event would mean great prestige. Getting a candidacy for the Europa League or Champions League finals is unrealistic, but the Conference League also gives space to smaller countries and stadiums.
And there is no shortage of quality, with Leicester, AS Roma, Marseille and Feyenoord all reaching the semi-finals in the first edition. Slavia Prague reached the quarter-finals, where they fell to their Dutch opponents.
The city council will set up a special group to look into all the circumstances surrounding the hosting of the event. The Czech Republic is competing with Israel, Cyprus, Greece, Northern Ireland and Slovakia, among others. This year’s final of the first ever edition will take place in Tirana, Albania.
“UEFA has asked us for a letter of intent (agreement on a future agreement) according to quite strict requirements that coincide with the candidacies of other cities. We are aware that this is an important event for UEFA, so it is necessary for the city to declare its full cooperation now,” councillor Vít Šimral, representing the Pirates, told reporters.
“It is necessary for the city to declare its readiness now. The requirements are not precisely specified, but it is there that it will provide full cooperation. We have managed in the past, among other things, the World Cup and all such events ended well, so I believe that hosting here would also turn out well,” Šimral added.
If the finals were actually played in the Czech Republic, the match would be hosted by Prague’s Eden Stadium, the largest stadium in the country.
