Concerns in France. If we don’t raise enough money, Ligue 1 will be like the Slovenian league, says French football boss
Although French football is still in the top five European leagues, its position is no longer so privileged. Portugal briefly broke into the top five this year. So there is some concern and the head of French football is clear about the need for improvement.

England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. That’s the current line-up of the top five European competitions by coefficient. France has already managed to drop out of the top five this year, replaced by Portugal.
While the first four countries mentioned above do not have to worry about their position at the moment, France has exactly the opposite. French clubs are simply not doing well in Europe.
There may be one big reason for this. According to the head of French football, Ligue 1 clubs need to raise more money to be competitive.
But that won’t be so easy. For the league to make money and gain attention, it needs to attract more viewers across the world. That does not seem to be an easy task. Yet in France, it is seen as an obligation.
“We need to make Ligue 1 an extremely attractive and spectacular competition within two years to maximise demand for TV rights in 2023. We also needto do well in Europe before the reforms are introduced in 2024,” Vincent Labrune is clear.
“If we drop out of Europe’s top five, the French league will be on the sidelines. If we are unable to raise the maximum money in the short term to bounce back, Ligue 1 will end up like the Slovenian league, with all due respect to our colleagues in Ljubljana,” he added to RMC.
