Comparing Tomas Soucek from his stellar season to now, deterioration almost everywhere, why is he not such a valid player anymore?

Tomas Soucek joined West Ham in 2020 and immediately became a fan favourite and an important member of the team. He was a big part of the Hammers’ rescue in the Premier League, but this year he was hit by a team-wide crisis which he carried over to the Czech national team.

In the 2020/2021 season, Tomas Soucek was named West Ham’s best player of the season, he also pulled for the Czech national team. He was talked about almost everywhere, even bigger clubs were interested in him. This year, however, we don’t recognize this player. West Ham are not doing well and he rode the wave of failure that he brought to the national team.

He’s been working hard every game, he hasn’t lost any of his amazing fitness. He has the ability to run every game, he understands tactics well. However, compared to his best season, he is not doing well in any stats.

In the 20/21 season he averaged 72.1 actions per game, of which 45.9 were successful. This year, the number of actions has dropped to 54.6 per game and successful actions to 36.6.

He was never one of the playmakers, but in his successful season he was able to average 37.6 passes, of which 31.4 passes per game were successful. This year, the number of passes dropped to 33.1 and the successful ones to 28.1.

The things that he was most important in for West Ham were defensive tackles and header duels. He was second to none in this statistic. In the 20/21 season he averaged 12.6 duels won per game, this season the figure has almost halved (6.9).

He won header duels very often, averaging 5.9 headers won per game, this year it is only 1.9 headers won per game.

West Ham are in 18th relegation position in the league, with only 4 points from seven games. The whole team, including Tomáš Souček, is failing. However, he took this form to the national team meeting.

His game against Portugal in the Nations League was a bitter failure. It was one of the weakest performances in the national team jersey ever given by this player.

However, he should be wearing the captain’s armband again in the match against Switzerland, so we can only hope that the match goes much better for him. It could be a reboot this season where he would then start to garner nothing but positive reviews.
