Gabon will enter the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday with Guelore Kanga on the roster. It will face group outsider Comoros in the group opener. What to expect from the match?
Comoros surprisingly qualified for the tournament from second place in qualifying Group G. They finished just three points behind first-placed Egypt, leaving Togo and, rather unexpectedly, Kenya behind.
Gabon secured their qualification with a round to go. They also went into the group stage from second place, leaving Gambia ahead by a score, while Angola and the unpredictable Congo were both on the breadline.
Gabon winger El Fardou Ben has already scored eight goals and assisted three times for Crvena Zvezda Belgrade this season. Faïz Selmani boasts a 9+4 record in the Belgian league and is expected to be the team’s main offensive threat.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is of course the visitors’ mainstay, scoring seven goals and assisting two this season across all competitions. Ex-Spartan Guelor Kanga has scored three times and assisted three times for Crvena Zvezda.
If the Comoros want to think about promotion, they need to start scoring goals. They have scored just four goals in six qualifying matches, and no other advancing team has done worse.
Gabon are not a goal machine either, with Aubameyang and co. scoring more than once in just one of their last eight games.
Given the individual quality on Gabon’s side and the scary form of the Comoros attack, I think Gabon will win.
