Champions League
Comment: the annual PSG woes – relegation in the Champions League and a team without motivation. Can this be changed?
PSG has been going through a yearly period where the team has been relegated from the Champions League and somehow lost the motivation to play for something. Not many factors are really playing into the hands of the Paris players in this one, is there any light at the end of the tunnel?
PSG has been going through a yearly period where the team has been relegated from the Champions League and somehow lost the motivation to play for something. Not many factors are really playing into the hands of the Paris players in this one, is there any light at the end of the tunnel?
The annual situation
Sunday’s French Ligue 1 match brought a surprise. A star-studded PSG lost 0:2 to Stade Rennais at the Parc des Princes. It was the first home defeat in the league in almost two years.
Despite the shocking home defeat, Paris Saint Germain still lead the French league by a comfortable seven points. It is thus highly likely that the club from the capital will go for the league title this year as well.
It is clear that the Parisians will not regret this loss for long. Unlike the failed double-header with Bayern Munich in Germany, which spelled the end for PSG in the millionaire competition.
PSG find themselves in this situation quite often. Getting knocked out of the Champions League is a great tragedy for the club, as it is clear that it will not lift the dream trophy for the Champions League winners above its head even this year. It’s actually the main thing by which a coach is judged.
Unbeatable in the league
And while all eyes of PSG fans are on the Champions League, the French league is taken as a must every year. No wonder, for example, in the salary comparison, the competitors are incredibly behind. On the domestic scene, Paris is simply unrivalled at the moment.
While this may seem like an advantage, it actually has the opposite effect on the club. The best teams in the world need to play against teams of similar quality to improve and test their limits.
Yes, this happens every year in the Champions League, but usually Paris Saint Germain get knocked out very early, and so they again lack comparison with the best teams in the world (In recent years, the French managed to reach the final once, but it must be said that the lot was very favorable).
The light at the end of the tunnel?
Unfortunately, all the disadvantages that come with playing in a lower quality competition will be felt by PSG in the years to come, in my opinion. After all, jumping between two gears must be hugely challenging for the team.
At the same time, the team cannot be accused of having a low quality of players, on the contrary, the team is loaded with the biggest stars, led by Messi and Mbappé.
However, I do see one light at the end of the tunnel for PSG. This, in my opinion, should be brought about by the new Champions League format, which will offer many more matches against quality opponents than has been the case so far. We’ll see the new format from the 2024/25 season. Do you see it the same way?
