Comment: Manchester United is in euphoria. Unfortunately, there is nothing to be happy about! A clear home win over Copenhagen confirms big problems
Manchester United managed to beat Copenhagen in the third round of the current Champions League, but they could have lost the victory at the very end if André Onana had not taken a penalty. And that’s how it’s been with the Red Devils all this season.
Manchester United managed to beat Copenhagen in the third round of the current Champions League, but they could have lost the victory at the very end if André Onana had not taken a penalty. And that’s how it’s been with the Red Devils all this season.
The high expectations for this season were gone rather quickly, as Manchester United lost 4 times in their opening 6 games. On top of that, there were morale problems with several players and injuries.
But now Erik ten Hag’s charges have notched up their third win in a row, the dressing room is emptying out, plus there are unexpected heroes like the much-damned Harry Maguire, who provided Manchester United with a much-needed 3 points.
It all looks like Manchester United are really on a roll and we have something to look forward to once again. Only let’s pour ourselves a glass of clear wine!
The first of the three wins was against Brentford, who were still 1-0 up in the 91st minute, whereupon Scott McTominay scored two goals after coming on in the 87th minute to give his team the win.
Even against Sheffield, we definitely can’t talk about a big win. Diogo Dalot made it happen in the 77th minute with a beautiful shot.
Tuesday’s game against Copenhagen also unfortunately has to be called a lucky one for Red Devils fans. After a relatively weak first half, Manchester United picked themselves up and started to outplay the Danes.
But instead of securing the win, they could have lost the victory at the very end when Copenhagen got the opportunity to score from a penalty kick.
Great teams in good playing condition like Manchester City or Arsenal not only manage to dominate the whole match and not let the opponent into any chances at all, but often win their matches by more than one goal.
Manchester United are currently nowhere near that level! Plus, we’re talking about teams they should clearly be outplaying and beating. Only that’s not happening and everyone is now asking one question: what’s in store for the fans now?
Because Manchester United have a derby with the Citizens and then they also host Newcastle. These two matches will certainly give a hint whether the euphoria that the Red Devils are currently riding on will be shattered by reality, or whether that Hag’s charges have really woken up.
Tottenham, Arsenal or Bayern Munich have shown the Manchester side where they currently belong. We’ll see this weekend whether that remains the case. However, given the previous performances, we can expect rather the worse option and hope that it won’t be a debacle.
