Liverpool won their Premier League match against Arsenal on Wednesday and after a 2:0 win they are now only one point behind Manchester City. It was decided by goals from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.
Virgil van Dijk had the first chance in the third minute, but Aaron Ramsdale made a good save. Liverpool continued to be more active on the ball, with the Gunners particularly angry from breakaway chances.
A shot-poor first half offered good individual performances from the two midfielders, with Thomas Partey shining on the home side and Fabinho in the away jersey.
It wasn’t until the 45th minute that Trent Alexander Arnold found Sadio Mané behind the defence, but he missed the target with a sliding shot. The score was 0:0, with only one shot between the three posts.
In the 46th minute, Sadio Mané got the ball into the net, but the linesman called offside, which was subsequently confirmed by VAR. Five minutes later, Thiago Alcantara crossed pointlessly backwards, but Martin Odegaard missed the half-covered goal as he had hoped and Alisson was able to come back.
In the 54th minute, Liverpool celebrated a regular goal. Thiago found Diogo Jota and he uncompromisingly finished to the near post. Eight minutes later it was two goals. Andrew Robertson found Roberto Firmino in the whitewash, who already had an easy job.
Then it was game over. Liverpool had a few glitches, Arsenal were under the blanket and nothing was going forward. It wasn’t until the 88th minute that Gabriel Martinelli spun the ball towards the back post, but missed by a whisker.
Liverpool are now just one point behind first placed Manchester City after a 2-0 win, with Arsenal still fourth.
