Coman hammered the final nail in the Red Devils’ cup coffin. Manchester United finish last in the Champions League group after losing to Bayern

From the first place in Group A of the Champions League, Bayern Munich, already surely promoted, upset Old Trafford. Four-point Manchester United needed Tuesday’s game badly to break away from the last place in the table. However, it failed to do so, with Kingsley Coman scoring the only goal of the encounter in the second half.

The evening’s performance at the Theatre of Dreams was played at a solid pace from the start, with the visitors noticeably more active up front. Kane or Kimmich headed between the three posts in the opening quarter of an hour, but they didn’t force goalkeeper André Onana into too many difficult saves.

In the 17th minute, the German team demanded a penalty after a duel between Maguire and Musiala, but to no avail. Subsequently, the defensive line of the Bavarian big club stopped a promising break of the Red Devils without facing a dangerous finish at the end. In the 24th minute, Manuel Neuer had to intervene, as he was able to parry Shaw’s shot for a corner.

Three minutes later, Sané kept the Manchester defenders significantly occupied when he cut through the middle of the pitch into the sixth. However, he did not get a shot off. In the 32nd minute, the same player failed to finish off a quick counter-attack.

Five minutes later, Erik ten Hag’s team suffered a setback. Stoker Harry Maguire injured his groin and left the field shortly afterwards. He was replaced by Jonny Evans. The score remained unchanged until half-time.

There were substitutions on both sides during the break. Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaced Luke Shaw on the Manchester side, Konrad Laimer came on for Noussair Mazraoui on the Munich side.

In the 49th minute, home captain Fernandes wasted a great chance. On the edge of the penalty area, he received an ideal return pass from Wan-Bissaka, only to shoot high over the crossbar. The Portuguese midfielder sent in another shot in the 54th minute, but it didn’t have much accuracy either.

Manchester United’s chances of securing a promotion were diminishing as time wore on, with Bayern relatively calmly controlling the flow of the match. And twenty minutes before the end of normal time, they even struck. Kingsley Coman ran behind the defensive line into the box, where Kane crossed the ball to him, and beat Onana.

In the 83rd minute, Harry Kane could have made the final decision, but his header was just wide of the right post. However, Thomas Tuchel’s charges didn’t mind too much, because the final onslaught by the opponent fighting for the participation in the spring phase of the European Cups didn’t come at all.

The Red Devils are therefore out of this year’s Champions League after a 0-1 defeat. In the parallel match of the regular Group A, Copenhagen defeated Galatasaray with a 58th minute goal from Lukas Lerager, thus completing Bayern Munich’s path to the playoffs of the millionaire competition. The Istanbul team is heading to the Europa League.
