Serbia had a tough opponent at the start of the Euros in the form of England. The latter was one of the main favourites before the tournament, but as the group stage progressed, they showed nothing and were not trusted much against comparable teams.
The Serbians lost the game against England anyway, when Jude Bellingham scored, but they didn’t put in a bad performance. In the match against Slovenia they were favourites, but in the 69th minute Zan Karnicnik scored and it seemed that this time it would not be enough for points either.
But the Serbs didn’t give up and Luka Jovic equalised in the fifth set minute to give his team hope of progression. To be sure, the Serbs needed to beat Denmark in their last match.
However, the Danes were aware that a point was enough and they didn’t need to rush anywhere. In the end, the match did not offer a goal and the Serbs ended up in last place with two points. The remaining teams in the group move on.
“We are disappointed that we were not able to make the missing step. The game was balanced, we were looking for chances and a goal, but unfortunately we didn’t manage to do it. I am proud of my boys. Serbia showed a positive performance in a very balanced group,” said Serbian coach Dragan Stojkovic at a press conferenceafter the game .
After praising his charges, he couldn’t forget the fans who supported their team steadfastly, even though the chances of advancing were fading by the minute.
“Serbian fans should be proud of this team. We fought until the last second and I am grateful to the fans for cheering us on in all three games,” he added.
