It was already decided before the game that England would be relegated from Group A of the UEFA Nations League. Still, Gareth Southgate’s side wanted to make amends for their recent poor performances in front of the home fans. However, they failed to do so as they only drew 3-3 with Germany.

The name of the English national team coach has been mainly associated with bad results in recent days. England failed to win a single match in the Nations League and as a finalist in the last European Championship they clearly fell short of expectations.

The German national team is in a similar position, finishing third in the table behind Italy and Hungary. In short, much more was expected from both teams…

England vs Germany 3::3 (0::0)

Goals:: 72. Shaw, 75. 75. Kane (penalty) – 52. Gündogan (penalty), 67. and 87. Havertz

England:: Pope – Stones (37. Walker), Dier, Maguire – James, Bellingham (90+1. Henderson), Rice, Shaw – Foden (66. Saka), Kane (C), Sterling (66. Mount)

Germany:: ter Stegen – Kehrer, Süle, Schlotterbeck, Raum (68. Gosens) – Gündogan, Kimmich (C) – Hofmann (46. Werner), Musiala, Sane (68. Gnabry) – Havertz (90+1. Bella-Kotchap)

The match played at Wembley stadium started cautiously. The first half ended in a 0:0 draw. Ter Stegen showed his goalkeeping skills by keeping out Raheem Sterling.

However, the second half saw a goal scoring spree. First, Germany struck twice. A foul by Maguire in the 52nd minute was followed by a penalty, which Gündogan converted with ease. Moments later, Havertz hit the post from outside the box and the score was 0:2.

England were able to rally, scoring their first goal in a competitive game since last November and even going for the win. Shaw scored first in the 72nd minute when he processed the ball through ter Stegen. Three minutes later, substitute Mount equalised to make it 2-2.

Seven minutes from the end of regulation time, Bellingham was fouled and England were awarded a penalty kick. It was taken by captain Harry Kane, who converted it with ease and sent his team into the lead.

Just when it looked like Southgate’s charges were going to make a spectacular turnaround, goalkeeper Pope made a mistake. The Newcastle goalkeeper failed to hold Gnabry’s shot and offered an easy position for Havertz to score.

At the very end, Saka had a chance but his shot was fingertipped by the German goalkeeper. Although it was an attractive game for the spectators, both teams were disappointed as they only drew 3-3.
