Two more rape charges were added to Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy’s criminal record on Tuesday. The 2018 world champion is unlikely to leave prison any time soon.

With Benjamin Mendy’s release, things are starting to look more than a little bleak. The 27-year-old footballer has been inhabiting a detention cell since August this year and it doesn’t look like he will be returning to normal life any time soon.

The then Manchester City left-back has been charged with three counts of rape. He was alleged to have committed them between October 2020 and August 2021 at his home address in Prestbury, Cheshire.

The scope of the charges has now increased – prosecutors accuse Mendy of two further rapes and one sexual harassment. The charges will be presented to the player in person on Wednesday when he is due to stand trial at Stockport Crown Court.

It will be recalled that Mendy has applied for bail to leave custody. By the time sentencing is due to take place (January 24, 2022), he will have been without any training for about six months. If he is convicted, it looks like the end of his career.

This is a footballing tragedy for Mendy, where his next club can only be Prison FC for a few years. That’s what they derisively call amateur football teams in the Islands that play games on the grounds of a prison.

If the charges are proved, however, it is primarily a personal tragedy for the women victims.
