Manchester took the lead in the second minute, but Alhonse Areola had no chance to parry a shot from distance. Phil Foden celebrated. The Citizens continued to press, then from a direct kick, midfielder Kevin de Bruyne headed wide.
The next danger came from Jeremy Doku’s free-kick, but the Belgian failed to beat Areola as well as De Bruyne. But there was someone else on the pitch from the goals, young Foden. In the 18th minute, he added a second shot, this time with a cross.
The Citizens could have closed the game definitively after half an hour of play, but Erling Haaland failed in a difficult position. On the other side, Mohammed Kudus was punished by Mohammed Kudus, who cut the score to 1:2 before half-time.
It could have been a two-goal game by half-time after all, but Haaland sent a great opportunity inside the penalty area punishingly over. Despite the clear dominance of the Citizens, it was 2:1 going into the booths, which kept the visitors in the game.
