Cincinnati: the biggest favourites are out, Kvitova is the last hope among Czech tennis players
Tournaments in North America are not going well for the paper favourites. In San Jose Kasatkina dominated the tournament as the number seven seed, but then in Toronto Simona Halep reigned supreme as the number 15 seed.
Tournaments in North America are not going well for the paper favourites. In San Jose Kasatkina dominated the tournament as the number seven seed, but then in Toronto Simona Halep reigned supreme as the number 15 seed.
For example, the world number one Iga Swiatek did not make it past the eighth round in Toronto or Cincinnati. In San Jose, Maria Sakkari was the number one instead, but she also fell in the opening game. World number two Anett Kontaveit had a similarly tragic outcome. She lost her opening match in Toronto and now her eighth-final match.
The first and last match was played by Barbora Krejcikova, who was not able to beat Russian Kudermetova. The second round meant the end for Maria Bouzkova, who did not start her duel with Alison Riske. She passed the first round thanks to her opponent’s scratch. Tereza Martincova fell in the second round to the aforementioned Anett Kontaveit.
Karolina Pliskova did not repeat her good result from Canada and after knocking out Venus Williams, she ended up in the second round on Elise Mertens’ racket with 2: 0 sets. Petra Kvitová remains the last Czech in the line-up.
She made her way to the quarterfinals through Jil Teichmann, Sorana Cirsteová and in the eighth round she defeated the top five seed from Tunisia, Ons Jabeur, in a fierce duel. Petra came into the match with a great start and thanks to the diametrically opposed serves of both players, the first set had a clear course and ended 6:1 in Petra’s favour.
The second set was much more even and was won by the Tunisian player 6: 4. In the final set Kvitova was again completely dominant and even more clearly than in the opening one. Which means only one thing, a canary and a demolition at 6::0. Kvitova will play her quarterfinal match on Friday at 19::30 against Australian qualifier Aila Tomljanovic. Petra goes into the match as the favourite.
