Wednesday’s poor football programme will offer “only” the European Super Cup. In it, the Champions League champion Chelsea of London will play the winner of the Europa League, Villarreal.
Chelsea have played three games in the preparation with a record of two wins and one draw. It defeated the hated Arsenal (2:1), managed the same result against Bournemouth and played 2:2 with Tottenham in the dress rehearsal.
The Europa League winner didn’t have nearly as good a record. Out of five attempts, it did not win even once, and only drew twice (with Lyon and Levante). Valencia, Marseille and then Leicester managed to beat him in the dress rehearsal.
Chelsea’s success in the Champions League was helped a lot by three central midfielders. The trio of N’golo Kanté, Jorginho, Mason Mount have had a great end to the season and a lot is expected of them this year as well.
Villarreal were led to the trophy by Spanish striker Gerrard Moreno, the competition’s top scorer. Chelsea must also watch out for young speedster Yeremi Pino or the brains of the team, Dani Pareja.
Chelsea’s defence has been excellent in recent months, scoring more than one goal in only one of their last twenty-five games. It is the Yellow Submarine who are the other way around, scoring at least twice in four of their five preliminary games.
Considering the good preparation and the quality of the squad, it is to be expected that Chelsea will manage the match already in normal time.
