Graham Potter has failed in his role and after 207 he says goodbye to the position of Chelsea coach, which now faces a duel with Liverpool. However, Jurgen Klopp’s charges have lost three games in a row. Who will come out better from the duel?
Leaving aside October, when Chelsea did really well, Potter failed to live up to the huge expectations that the new owner of the London club had. Since the new year, his charges have won only four games, which is really not enough. So the sacking of the English coach was no surprise.
Chelsea are currently in 11th place with 38 points, while the 6th place is occupied by the 6th. Brighton are 5 points behind, so there is some chance of playing in the European Cups next year.
The Blues could just as easily make it through the Champions League, in which they knocked out Borussia Dortmund in the opening round of the play-offs. But Real Madrid is a strong opponent and only a big optimist would bet on Chelsea.
Liverpool know this, having just been knocked out of the Champions League after two defeats to Madrid. In the last three games, Klopp’s boys have lost to Bournemouth, Real Madrid and Manchester City, scoring just one goal in those games.
Liverpool, however, are a little better off, as they are in 8th place with 42 points, with 6. Brighton, who have a game to spare, are only a point behind. So the Europa League for next season should be a realistic target for the Reds.
The mutual duels are very interesting as the last 5 have ended in draws. Neither team has scored a goal in the last 3 duels. However, Liverpool have enjoyed more joy after all, having beaten Chelsea twice on penalties this spring, first in the League Cup and then in the FA Cup.
Given the recall of Potter, the question will be how well the Blues will fare without him. This could be a big chance for Liverpool to finally score fully.
