Huge complication. Roman Abramovich, a longtime friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is on the British government’s sanctions list. What does this actually mean? The club’s sales are frozen, only season ticket holders can get into the games. What’s next for the reigning world champion?
After nineteen long years, the Russian oligarch has decided to get rid of one of the most successful teams of recent years. In his own words, it was a very difficult decision:
“Please know that it was an incredibly difficult decision and it hurts me to have to say goodbye to the club in this way. However, I believe it is in the best interests of the club.”
However, he is currently being prevented from selling by the British government, which has placed him on a sanctions list along with six other Russians who are in some way linked to Putin. The owner of the roughly £9.4 billion has denied links to the Russian president.
the “Blues” as a team can continue under a special license. However, only season ticket holders can enter the stadium, players cannot renew their contracts and the sale of club merchandise is also banned.
Fans of the West London club are not expecting anything friendly in the coming days and probably weeks.
After all, since his arrival at the club, the trophy cabinet has grown by 21 pieces, including two “Dressed” Cups and five league titles.
In addition, today, Chelsea travel to struggling Norwich in the 30th round of the English Premier League. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:30 CET.
