Wimbledon favourite Novak Djokovic hasn’t had to deal with any serious problems so far this year. His winning streak at the All England Club is unbelievable. Will his upcoming opponent threaten it? Italian Sinner has a lot to build on in their duels.

Novak Djokovic hasn’t been in any major trouble at Wimbledon so far this year. He’s only lost two sets in five matches. He is confirming his strength in the shortened games. He has won all five of the matches he has reached.

His long-term performance is incredible. The Serbian has won 33 matches in a row at the London Grand Slam. Plus, the possibility of attacking the calendar grand slam is in the air. The last time Rod Laver won all four majors of the season was in 1969.

Djokovic is two steps short of that feat this year. Win Wimbledon and the US Open. And he’s only two matches away from triumphing at Wimbledon at the moment. In the first of which, he’ll face Italian Sinner on Friday.

Better than last year?

Sinner is only the third Italian in history to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals. He has been working a lot with his team on handling tough match situations and he made good use of it in the quarterfinal against Roman Safiullin. Despite taking a break lead in the second set, he lost his serve twice and the entire second set. And yet he kept the match against the Russian under control.

He won the third and fourth sets convincingly and set a new high at the Major. So far his top performances have been very consistent, and he has played once in the quarterfinals at all Grand Slams. The up-and-coming Italian wants more.

He once chose tennis as his number one sport because it is a strategic battle between two players. He likened it to chess. He also faced Djokovic at Wimbledon last year and in the terminology of the royal game, gave the local champion a check.

The twenty-one-year-old tennis player won the first two sets against the big favourite then. But the rest of the match belonged to the Serb. Is it realistic that the Italian will beat Djokovic this year?

Will Sinner threaten Djokovic?

Sinner’s journey through the tournament seems to be sovereign, but so far he has not met a tennis player from the elite 50 of the ATP rankings. Even his form this year (10 defeats in 47 matches) doesn’t seem to be enough to beat one of the best grass tennis players in history.

The Italian would have to put in a performance of a lifetime to come close to knocking out Djokovic. And it would be a big surprise if he gave the playing legend of world tennis a Wimbledon checkmate.
