The last Grand Slam of the season offered not only a sensational winner, but also several shifts in the women’s world rankings. Let’s take a look at who moved up and who will have to make up points elsewhere again. Ashleigh Barty remains the world number one, followed by Aryna Sabalenka.
Moving forward
Behind Sabalenka, however, the standings have changed in a big way. Moving up a place are Karolina Pliskova and Petra Kvitova, who are now ranked 3rd and 10th respectively. Then Barbora Krejcikova recorded the best result of her career, she is now seventh in the new edition of the rankings.
Maria Sakkariova (now 13th – moving up 5 places), Tamara Zidanishek (34th – moving up 3 places) and Sloane Stephens also had great moves. (54th – moving up 12 places). For the first two, the jump marks the best ranking of their careers. The same applies to Russian Ludmilla Samsonova in the top 50, who will now be 48th in the rankings.
All these minor shifts, however, have been pocketed by the two US Open finalists. Leylah Fernandez scored a total of 1,230 points and a jump of 45 places means she is 28th, which should mean seeding for other tournaments, especially Grand Slams.
Emma Raducan made a kangaroo leap up. A qualifier who went through the entire tournament without losing a set and will now be ranked 23rd in the world. The British sensation suddenly goes from underdog to favourite in most matches.
Falling down
Croatia’s Donna Vekić has the biggest drop down in the top 100, and will now be ranked 99th (down 41 places). Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson also dropped down. The 26-year-old was unable to defend her points from the last two US Opens and will now be 78th (down 24 places)
At the edge of the seeded 32, Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (dropping 13 places) has fallen to the bottom of the rankings, losing a total of 1170 ranking points and facing a battle for Grand Slam privilege.
Due to injury and non-participation in the last Grand Slam of the season, women’s tennis legend Serena Williams has already dropped out of the top 32. The new holder of 23 Grand Slam trophies will be ranked 41st.
Czech women
The Czech Republic has three representatives among the world’s top ten in Monday’s ranking. Our highest-ranked player is still currently third Karolína Plíšková, followed by Barbora Krejčíková (now 7th – the best result in her career) and Petra Kvitová (10th).
