Chance to break through in the national team: Čvančara has one shot, Černý has to play, but not through the leg

The Czech national team will enter the Euro 2024 qualifiers on Friday. In addition to the long-standing mainstays, two unusual names have also claimed a place in the line-up. Václav Černý and Tomáš Čvančara are in a form that would be a shame to leave on the bench.

Václav Černý

He has been one of the best Czechs working abroad since the beginning of the season, and he has graced February and March with one point after another. Twente are now literally dependent on Vaclav Cerny and hold fifth place in the table.

Moreover, the national team is lacking a similar player. Cerny is a modern European winger, not afraid of one-on-one battles. His strengths stand out especially on the right when he has his strong left foot towards the middle.

The training center leaked information that he could fill the role of a left wing-back. And that would most likely not end well. Cerny is not like Lukáš Masopust or Jakub Jankto, a winger who also defends behind defenders, giving them space to attack.

Cerny needs to have freedom and space for his individual penetrations, he’s not used to running up and down the line. And over the foot would make his strengths even more fitting. It’s like sending Arjen Robben out on a wing-back just because he’s left-handed.

Tomáš Čvančara

He’s a stormer, he splashes the occasional beacon, but he’s simply had a form this spring that’s a shame to overlook. So if Jaroslav Šilhavy has pulled Čvančara and co. away from the lionesses ahead of the Euros, he might as well play him.

In the absence of Patrik Schick, the use of the tandem of Jan Kuchta, Čvančara is a perfect fit. The two competitors have turned into teammates who are great in a red jersey and both will be fighting for the status of the league’s top scorer.

Čvančara’s height and physical strength will replace Schick, as one of the few players in the national team with a very good shot from outside the box. The goalkeepers only box out his shots, which benefits Kuchta and Lukas Haraslin.

If Cvančara gets a chance, he must make the most of it, because the second one may not come for a long time. Schick is the clear number one, Kuchta profiles as a number two, but the third spot has been vacant for a long time.
