The preliminary rounds of the LM are over, followed by the group stage. First, however, the draw had to take place, which determined how the groups would be composed. During Thursday’s gala evening, the awards for the past season were also presented.
Who received awards for the previous year?
The goalkeeper of the season is Édouard Mendy. The Chelsea goalkeeper helped the team to triumph in the Champions League and was an important part of the line-up. The award for the best defender of the season went to Rúben Dias of Manchester City. The Portuguese helped the team to win the Premier League title and was the main driving force for the Citizens.
The award for the best midfielder went to Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté. The Frenchman helped the Blues to the Champions League title. The striker of the season is Erling Haaland of Dortmund. The Norwegian cannonballer is BVB’s best player and is already one of the best strikers in the world. The player of the season is Jorginho. The award for the best coach goes to Thomas Tuchel.
Which groups are the most interesting?
The main draw may be Group A. It will feature Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain, Leipzig and Bruges. It is realistic that there will be a Ronaldo vs. Messi clash, which would be very interesting. However, there has to be a transfer of Ronaldo to Manchester City, who want to acquire him. The favourites here are clear, but Leipzig should not be underestimated.
The “B” group is the group of death. Atlético Madrid, Liverpool, Porto and AC Milan are all in the running. Liverpool and AC Milan are Champions League winners, Atlético is a tournament team and can often make it to the final stages, even Porto has quality. Liverpool should secure promotion along with Atlético.
Group E is also very attractive. It includes Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Benfica Lisbon and Dynamo Kiev. A very balanced group. Barcelona without Messi will not have an easy time of it.
The defending champions have a relatively favourable draw. Chelsea of London will face Juventus Turin, Zenit St Petersburg and Malmo. The Blues’ progression should be a mere formality. The same goes for Juventus.
Lille, Sevilla, Salzburg and Wolfsburg are the favourites in Group G. A difficult to predict group could end up either way. The lot was very favourable to these teams and all of them have a great chance to reach the eighth round.

The start of the main groups is scheduled for 14 and 15 September. The finals will take place on May 28, 2022, hosted by St. Petersburg, Russia.
