Carvajal: We thought Mbappé was coming. We asked the French if they knew anything from him
Kylian Mbappé and his saga to Real Madrid has been dragging on for several years now. And it didn’t work out this time either, yet it seemed close. Even Los Blancos players already thought a transfer was imminent.
Kylian Mbappé and his saga to Real Madrid has been dragging on for several years now. And it didn’t work out this time either, yet it seemed close. Even Los Blancos players already thought a transfer was imminent.
For the third year in a row, Real Madrid are trying to make a move for Kylian Mbappé. And this year seemed to be the best chance to get him. In fact, the Frenchman has officially announced that he will not be renewing his contract, which expires next year.
In response, PSG ruled him out of the Asian tour and were expected to insist on selling him. At the time, the world’s leading journalists considered Mbappé’s move to Madrid to be a matter of time, but that didn’t end up happening.
“I won’t lie and say we didn’t discuss it, but there were different opinions. In the preparation when we sat around the table, one said he thought he would come, another said he wouldn’t,” says Dani Carvajal in an interview with Relevo at the Spanish national team meeting.
“I thought he would come. Real Madrid is his option to leave. And the moment he didn’t go on tour with the team to Japan, we saw his arrival very close. But then, it seems, everything turned around,” adds one of the Real Madrid captains.
Mbappé would feel at home at Real Madrid, with three good friends from the national team, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardco Camavinga and Ferland Mendy.
“Sometimes we used to ask the French: ‘hey, do you know anything from this guy?’ No, they didn’t know anything either. He’s one of the best players and you have to play for Real Madrid in the final,” Carvajal concluded.
Mbappé thus stayed in Paris for one more season, but made it clear he would not sign a new contract. It will be interesting to see how his case will develop next summer.
