Carragher on Chelsea: I don’t know why players go there
Jamie Carragher has been very harsh on Chelsea. The London club is still buying players even though it has too many of them. The English icon didn’t spare any strong words for the players who know how many players are in the squad, but still transfer to the club. Moreover, players are signing long-term contracts.

- Chelsea are on a transfer market spree
- Players are like commodities
- The Liverpool legend doesn’t understand why anyone still goes there
Chelsea transfers
Under the guidance of Enzo Maresca, no fewer than 11 players arrived at Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window. The Italian manager even signed 2 goalkeepers. Filip Jorgensen came from Villareal and Mike Penders from Genk. Chelsea thus have 5 goalkeepers in their squad, all of whom could make goalkeeping number one in the leading clubs of European competitions.
The defence remains a drop behind expectations as it has been expanded by only 3 names. Tosin Aderabiyo was already an expected reinforcement as a free agent before the end of the season. Atalanta’s Caleb Wiley, at 19 years old, is more of an investment for the future, which could also be said of stopper Aaron Anselmin, who arrives from Villareal.
The midfield and attack of the London team? Maresca has so many players at his disposal that he could put together 2-3 teams fighting for European cups in the Premier League. The one attracting the most attention is returnee Joao Felix for 52 million euros. However, the most expensive signing is Pedro Neto from Wolves with a price tag of 60 million euros. Four players have been added to the midfield.
Not only are Chelsea buying players, the players are on long contracts. At the beginning of August, no less than 17 players from the squad were under contract until at least 2030! The new arrivals won’t have a much shorter contract either. Is this a smart move by the club or will Chelsea lose out? Only the future will tell.
Carragher on Chelsea’s transfer policy
“Chelsea have to stop buying players who have to stop coming to a club like this. I don’t know why as a player I would be interested in going to Chelsea,” the former Liverpool and England national team stopper began very emotionally. Carragher knows very well that in a competition of up to 40 players it must be almost impossible to make it.
“The only reason I would do it would be money. If my agent said I would get a 7-year contract for good money, it would be guaranteed money for 7 years,” the Englishman added. Players at Chelsea have guaranteed money for 7 years and they don’t really have to care about anything else, the club could pay for it in the future as they wouldn’t have to sell the player.
“I don’t understand why players sign a 7-year contract. However, even Chelsea themselves have nothing to offer. The latest signing is Felix, where is he going to play?” carragher concluded his monologue. However, the Portuguese offensive player managed to score in his first start of the new season and could shut the critics up.
