Carlos Alcaraz, who tried to continue his match at the Rio tournament, soon realized that the condition of his ankle was not good and decided to withdraw from the tournament to avoid possible serious complications. Brazilian Thiago Monteiro thus made it through the first round after two games played.
This unfortunate incident reminded tennis fans of a similar situation experienced by German player Alexander Zverev during the semi-finals of Roland Garros in 2022, when he injured his ankle on court.
With the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, we are now waiting for the results of the medical tests that Alcaraz will undergo in the coming hours. The Spaniard’s participation in the tournament will be decided in the following days.
Alcaraz and his statement
“I’m going to have tests on my ankle. We will see if it is a serious injury,” said the Spaniard, quoted by the BBC. “I felt pain and decided to withdraw from the tournament to avoid any further complications. I hope to recover soon and be able to compete at full strength again,” he added.
Related to this injury, it now also puts in jeopardy Alcaraz’s plans to participate in an exhibition match in Las Vegas against Rafael Nadal. That was highly publicised and was due to take place before the Indian Wells tournament.
Alcaraz’s withdrawal from the Rio de Janeiro tournament raises questions about his upcoming form. Fans are now anxiously awaiting more information on his health and his return to the court.
Alcaraz will face Nadal in early March. Fans in Brazil have missed out on the biggest star of the Rio tournament. Norrie, Djere and Jerry should fight for the title.
